National Dental Hygiene Month & Halloween At The Same Time?

It almost seems comical to discover that The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) names October as National Dental Hygiene Month when the end of the moth marks the time when children try to bag as much candy as possible while trick-or-treating.

Maybe the two are combined on purpose so the ADHA can help spread the message about proper oral care even in the face of a temptingly stuffed bucket of candy.

This year is the fifth year in a row that the ADHA has partnered with Wm. Wringley Jr. Company to get the word out about the four major components of excellent oral care.

The Wrigley company is the proud maker of Orbit® Sugar-free gum, which offers a healthy alternative to chomping on sugary gum that would bathe your teeth in sugar and can increase erosion and cavities.

Coupled with Wrigley, the ADHA recommend a focus on these four things to achieve and maintain oral health:

  • Brush twice a day, for two minutes each time
  • Floss every day
  • Rinse with an antimicrobial mouth wash
  • Chew sugar-free gum

All across the country, dental hygienists will be partnering with schools, their dental practices, and utilizing social media to promote these four simple steps for good oral health. With Halloween just around the corner, it is a good time to remind your children of these tips and help encourage them to develop healthy oral habits.

An Overview of Dental Health – What You Need To Know

You know you’re supposed to brush twice per day and floss every night, but there are so many other important factors that collaborate to keep your mouth healthy. If we break down every area of dental health, there are important tips that everyone can follow.

What Should You Use For Optimal Dental Health?

Having bad oral health can affect more than just your pearly whites. Studies have shown that, if your mouth gets infected, it can affect your skin, heart, liver, and blood. So, how do you know that you’re using the right tools for overall mouth-health? Check out this list from our Omaha dentists:

  • Toothbrushes – choose a brush that will clean your enamel and between your teeth. Change the brush or the brush head every 2-3 months and after you’ve had an illness
  • Floss – floss should be utilized every night and any time there is food in-between your teeth. Choose a type that doesn’t get stuck or hurt your gums
  • Mouthwash – an antibacterial mouthwash used for at least 30 seconds can help kill the germs that cause bacteria in your mouth
  • Toothpaste – choose the right one for you, especially if you have sensitive teeth. Our Omaha dentists can help determine what type of enamel you have and recommend the best toothpaste option

In addition to regular oral care and hygiene, visiting one of our Nebraska dental offices can ensure that your teeth and gums are cared for in the proper ways. We check for warning signs of oral cancer, gingivitis, and cavities and help establish care plans to prevent these from happening.

Our teams of cosmetic dentists at The Dentists of Omaha have experience with all forms of cosmetic, general, and family dentistry. We are here to help you have gorgeous teeth with the added bonus of a healthy mouth.
