Root Canals

Root Canal Treatment for Omaha, Bellevue and nearby areas of Nebraska

Root canal treatment saves a tooth that is infected or inflamed in its roots, which are the chambers below the surface of the gums. Treatment often prevents the need for a tooth extraction and eliminates any pain caused by this dental problem. The procedure involves removing the infected pulp and cleaning the root chambers.

What is a Root Canal?

Root canals are the hollow chambers at the bottom of your teeth. These chambers contain the pulp. The pulp is soft tissue housed within the root canals. The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels that helped the teeth develop. Once teeth are fully developed they can survive without the pulp. Root canal therapy, also called endodontic treatment, is the procedure that eliminates infection within these canals.

This treatment may be necessary as a result of:

  • Tooth decay
  • Facial injury
  • Cracked or broken teeth

All of the above can lead to a serious infection within the root chambers. If left to its devices, the problem will worsen. It could ultimately lead to an abscess and significant pain, and eventually the loss of the tooth itself. Prompt treatment is important.

You may be worried about this procedure. It has gotten a bad reputation over the years. In fact, the local anesthetic will ensure you are comfortable while the treatment is completed. Afterward, most patients need only over-the-counter pain medications to relieve sensitivity or discomfort. The pain caused by an untreated infection, however, can be significant.

Schedule an Appointment if You Have Dental Symptoms

Most often, there are no signs or symptoms that you need root canal treatment. In other cases, a person may experience:

  • Pain
  • Tenderness when chewing or when touching the tooth
  • Lasting sensitivity to heat and cold
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling of the gums around the tooth

It depends on the nature of the infection or inflammation and the degree to which it has progressed. An abscess below the tooth will certainly be painful, which is why treatment before this stage is important.

If you need root canal treatment, it has several benefits:

  • May prevent the need for extraction
  • Procedure itself is painless and effective
  • Helps restore optimum dental health

Our experienced dentists will examine your teeth and mouth. Then we provide custom recommendations for achieving optimal oral health.

What Happens During Root Canal Treatment?

The basic steps are as follows:

  • The surrounding area and tooth are numbed
  • An opening is made at the top of the tooth
  • The infected and inflamed pulp, nerves and tissue is removed
  • The chambers of the tooth are cleaned out and disinfected with a medicated solution
  • The chambers are filled with a rubber-like medical material
  • The tooth is sealed and protected with a temporary filling or permanent restoration

A tooth treated this way is often restored with a dental crown. The crown covers and protects the tooth while also restoring its appearance.

Long-Term Prevention of Serious Tooth Decay

In many cases, root canal therapy can be avoided. Take these steps to prevent tooth decay and injury that may lead to a serious infection or inflammation:

  • Brush 2-3 times per day
  • Floss once every day
  • Visit the dentist for routine and regular checkups and cleanings
  • Drink more water and fewer sugary beverages

These oral hygiene measures will prevent the issues that often necessitate root canal treatment.
