Types of Teeth Stains

If you have yellow, dull, or discolored teeth, you may be interested in teeth whitening to restore a brighter smile. Our Omaha dentistry practice offers professional-grade teeth whitening kits that you can use at home, allowing you to whiten your smile on your own time, while still benefiting from the supervision of our experienced dentistry team. We are dedicated to ensuring optimal safety, comfort, and results throughout your teeth whitening treatment. Not all teeth stains alike. Generally speaking, there are two main types of teeth stains:

  • Extrinsic – Typically caused by beverages like coffee, wine, and tea, as well as beets, berries, and other dark foods. Extrinsic stains build up in the thin film of protein that covers the enamel layer of your teeth. Smoking and poor oral hygiene can worsen extrinsic stains.
  • Intrinsic – These stains are located deeper within the enamel, and are most commonly caused by medications or past trauma to the mouth. Infection and the natural aging process can also contribute to intrinsic stains, which usually look gray or yellowish brown.

Tooth whitening effectively targets and eliminates extrinsic stains. However, if you have any intrinsic stains (e.g. stains caused by taking tetracycline), these may not be as easy to remove. During a consultation, our experienced Omaha dentistry team will examine your teeth to determine what types of stains you have, and what teeth whitening can accomplish in your unique case.
